6 Cocktails to Make This August

Hey guys!

While I may not drink alcohol as much as a lot of people my age, I do love a good cocktail. Not only are cocktails Instagrammable, but they’re also fruity, sweet and moreish. They’re so tasty that sometimes it can be difficult to taste the alcohol – which is not so good for your head and bank balance. There are 6 cocktails I tend to go for when I’m out with friends, so I’ve included brief recipes below so that you can make them yourself:

1. June Bug

I first tried June Bug at Gibson’s (in York) back in my first year of uni and it’s since become one of my favourite cocktails. I absolutely love the combination of banana, coconut, melon and pineapple. To make June Bug, you will need 1 part Malibu coconut rum, 1 part Midori melon liquor, 1 part creme de banana, 3 parts pineapple juice. Shake the main ingredients together in a tumbler and squeeze a fresh lime over the top.

2. Pimm’s

There’s nothing more British than a jug of Pimm’s, amirite? If you have yet to try the deliciousness that is Pimm’s, it’s basically a cocktail that comprises of alcohol, lemonade and fruit. Yummy. Impress your friends by making a jug of this delicious drink at a BBQ or before hitting town. All you need is a bottle of Pimm’s and lemonade with some mint leaves, cucumber slices and pieces of strawberry.

3. Mojito

Mojito may be more tangy than sweet, but it’s still tasty and very refreshing. It’s pretty much illegal to go to Spain without having at least one glass of Mojito during your stay. To make Mojito, combine together 2 or 3 shots of rum, a generous helping of sparkling water (or soda), a handful of mint leaves, some sugar, and a hint of lime. Crush a little to bring out the flavour. For a sweet twist, add slices of fresh strawberries.

4. Sex on the Beach

Sex on the Beach is another cocktail that is perfect for the summer. It’s believed that Sex on the Beach was first made in Florida back in 1987 by a barman called Ted, and the original ingredients were peach schnapps, vodka, orange juice and grenadine. There have been many variations since, but the most popular one contains cranberry juice, as well as orange juice. Simply shake together 1 part vodka, 1 part peach schnapps, 2 parts cranberry juice and 2 parts orange juice. Decorate the glass with a glace cherry.

5. Sangria

As with Mojito, Sangria is most commonly associated with Spain. However, there is no reason why you can’t make it yourself. You will need 2 parts red wine, 1 part brandy, some sugar syrup (you can make this by dissolving four tablespoons of sugar in a glass of water), mint leaves and sliced fruit (strawberries, oranges and lemons work best).

6. Pina Colada

(Taken by me)

Pina Colada screams exotic. It’s very thick and creamy, so it’s best to have it as a treat, rather than a pre-drink. Pour 42.6ml Malibu rum into a cocktail shaker, add 57ml pineapple juice, mix with 57ml coconut cream (or milk – whichever you fancy), and shake well before serving.

What are your favourite cocktails? Have you tried any of the ones I’ve mentioned?

I love cocktails so damn much, I don’t think i’ve ever come across one that I can say I wouldn’t drink they’re just so yummy! I do like to add a bit of a fruity taste to Mojitos though like raspberry or peach!! I’ve never heard of June Bug either so that’s definitely one that I’ll be trying very soon 🙂 I bloody love pineapple, just adds a level of sweetness you don’t get from anything else!
