My Favourite Musicals

My Favourite Musicals

Hey guys!

Hope you’re all enjoying the sunshine! It’s much needed after all the rain during the last two weeks. I know I usually post my ‘Tune Tuesday’ series on Tuesdays, but I thought I’d do something a bit different this week and share some of my favourite musicals.

Musicals are one of those things you either love or hate. Well, I personally love musicals. The songs, the costumes, the characters, you name it. My love for musicals started way back when I had just started primary school and sat down to watch The Sound of Music. I try to see at least one musical in the West End a year, and I have several on DVD too. I guess you could call me a musical nerd!

So here is a list of my favourite musicals, in no particular order:

  1. The Sound of Music

Who doesn’t love The Sound of Music?! It’s such a sweet film and Julie Andrews is perfect as Maria. The kids are cute too – I particularly like Gretel and Maria. I also love the songs, especially ‘Maria’, ‘Sixteen Going On Seventeen’, ‘My Favourite Things’ and ‘Do-Re-Mi’.

  1. Grease

Like The Sound of Music, Grease was one of the first musicals (as well as films in general) that I ever saw. I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve watched it at least ten times since I was four or five. I’m sure you’re all familiar with the plot, but just in case you’re not, it’s about a couple of teenagers (Sandy and Danny) who fall in love during a summer holiday. It seems like they’ll never see each other again…until Sandy turns up at Danny’s school…

  1. Oliver

If you haven’t seen Oliver (and I’m talking about the 1968 version here), you’re missing out. It’s such a classic and the songs are so catchy (think ‘Food Glorious Food’ and ‘Consider Yourself’). Mark Lester is adorable too. I always thought The Artful Dodger was so cheeky and I felt so sorry for Nancy. Bill Sikes is just the worst!

  1. Wicked

Wicked is the only musical that does not have a film version – yet! I saw it live in the West End with my grandparents seven or eight years ago, and I loved it so much that I saw it again a couple of years later with my Spanish friend! Wicked follows the story of Elphaba, the evil green witch in The Wizard of Oz, from when she was born to when Dorothy arrived in Oz. The original musical stars Idina Menzel, whose vocals are absolutely breath-taking. I get chills every time I hear ‘Defying Gravity’.

  1. Mary Poppins

How could I not include Disney?! Mary Poppins was one of my favourite films as a kid, and I always wanted a nanny like Mary. She’s so magical and I was curious about how she managed to fit so many things in her bag! I also love that it’s set in London, where I live! They’re remaking Mary Poppins with Emily Blunt soon, so I have to rewatch it before then!

Other musicals I love include Annie, Hairspray and Mamma Mia.

So those are my favourite musicals! Do you like musicals? Which are your favourites?

Oh, I love so many of these! Wicked is my favorite of the bunch (I can’t wait for the movie). And Julie Andrews is amazing in both Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. I like Grease, too. I’ve never seen Oliver, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for it. One you don’t mention that I’m a big fan of is Rent.
