My Top Auto-Buy Authors

My Top Auto-Buy Authors

Hey guys!

I was recently browsing Chapters of May when I came across a post about Anika’s top auto-buy authors, and it inspired me to create my own list. For those of you who may be new to the concept, an auto-buy author is basically an author whose books I’ll immediately purchase (or add to my forever increasing TBR list), even without knowing anything about the book! These are the authors I just know will release unputdownable books that I’d recommend in an instant. So without further ado, here are my top auto-buy authors:

1. John Green

my top auto-buy authors

The first author on this list is John Green. I was introduced to John Green back in 2013/2014, when I read The Fault in Our Stars and I proceeded to read his entire backlist (although I still have yet to read Will Grayson, Will Grayson). If you’re not familiar with John Green (very unlikely), he’s an American author who writes YA fiction. His books are quotable and funny, and his characters all seem wise beyond their years.

Number of books read: 6

Favourite book(s): The Fault in Our Stars and Turtles All the Way Down

2. Sarah Dessen

my top auto-buy authors

Sarah Dessen is very high up on my list of auto-buy authors. When I see that she has a new book out, I have to grab it! As I mentioned in my review of What Happened to Goodbye, what I love about Sarah Dessen is that she writes uplifting and realistic books, and her protagonists are (mostly) likeable and relatable. Her books tend to be set during the summer holidays and centre on teenage girls who experience real-life issues, such as divorce, first love, peer pressure and moving home. If you love YA, you’re bound to love Sarah Dessen.

Number of books read: 12

Favourite book(s): What Happened to Goodbye and Someone Like You

3. Meg Cabot

my top auto-buy authors

Meg Cabot is an author I’ve been a fan of since I was a teenager. I’ve read 19 of her books so far, including ALL of the books in the Princess Diaries series and some of her standalone novels, such as Teen IdolJinx and How to Be Popular. I recently finished No Judgments, a fun summery romance, and I’ll be reading its follow-up ASAP. I’m also intrigued by the historical romance novels Meg Cabot wrote under the pseudonym Patricia Cabot.

Number of books read: 19

Favourite book(s): The Princess Diaries series

4. Sophie Kinsella

my top auto-buy authors

Next on this list is Sophie Kinsella, an author I’ve loved for much of my adult life. I actually first read her over a decade ago, when I stumbled upon a copy of The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic in my school library. It was a while before I got round to reading the rest of the series, but when I finally did, I devoured them quickly. I’ve read 16 of Sophie Kinsella’s books, which makes her my second most popular author after Meg Cabot.

Number of books read: 16

Favourite book(s): Shopaholic series, of course!

5. Angie Thomas

my top auto-buy authors

Like Anika, I fell in love with Angie Thomas after reading The Hate U Give. It’s such an amazing book that tackles important issues – racism and police brutality in America. When I heard about On the Come Up, I had to read it too, and while it doesn’t compare to The Hate U Give, it’s still a brilliant book. I’ll definitely be picking up a copy of Concrete Rose when it’s released next year – I just know I’ll love it!

Number of books read: 2

Favourite book(s): The Hate U Give

6. Jessie Burton

my top auto-buy authors

My love for Jessie Burton started with The Miniaturist, back in 2015. It’s such a gripping story with intriguing characters and was quite different to books I normally read. I also really enjoyed The Muse and The Confession. I’m looking forward to reading Jessie Burton’s fourth novel (I have no idea when it’ll be released but hopefully it’ll be soon!).

Number of books read: 3

Favourite book(s): It’s so hard to choose, but probably The Miniaturist!

7. Nicola Yoon

my top auto-buy authors

Nicola Yoon may only have published 2 books so far but I’ll be first in line when she next releases a book. The Sun Is Also A Star and Everything Everything are both such beautiful novels. Nicola Yoon really knows how to tug at your heartstrings.

Number of books read: 2

Favourite book(s): Everything Everything

JoJo Moyes, Jodi Picoult, Sara Shepard, Colleen Hoover and Gayle Forman are quickly becoming some of my favourite authors, and I instantly add their books to my TBR list. I’m sure that within the next couple of years I would’ve read the majority of their books.

Do you have any auto-buy authors? If so, who is on your list?

I haven’t heard of Elin Hilderbrand, but some of Lindsey Kelk’s books are on my TBR list! Thanks for the recommendations!

  2. I’m so glad you liked my post! And I love your picks, I just read Sophie Kinsella’s newest book and really enjoyed it. And John Green used to be one of my favourites too!

I love this concept! I read a lot of John Green’s books too! The Fault in Our Stars will always be my favorite from his work though! 🙂

  4. This is such a great idea for a post, it’s interesting to see what others enjoy reading. My auto-buy authors have to be Karen Slaughter, Ian Ranking and I have enjoyed both of Holly Jacksons books so I would definitely buy more of her books.

  5. John Green is the top of my list as well. I don’t buy until I’ve already read, so my list is an “auto-READ” but it’s pretty much the same concept. I also love Nicola Yoon and Angie Thomas and recently I’ve discovered that I ADORE Sophie Kinsella. I’ve also read tons by Sarah Dessen – though it’s been years and years, and I really like Meg Cabot. So it sounds like we have similar tastes hehe. Jessie Burton is the only one I was unfamiliar with *goes and looks up all her work immediately*
