So I know it’s the end of August and summer’s almost over, but as I didn’t get round to posting a playlist in June or July, I thought I’d share all of the songs I’ve enjoyed listening to during the last few months in one long ‘Summer Playlist’. Most of the songs on this playlist are upbeat and catchy – perfect for a BBQ / pool party or road trip – but I’ve also included some slower ballads from artists like Jessica Mauboy and Tori Kelly, for when you’re just chilling.
I’ve written a bit about some of the most notable songs on my summer playlist…
After releasing the absolute bop ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ back in 2015, I had high expectations from Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s second collaboration and it didn’t disappoint. ‘Señorita’ is a sultry jam that I’ve had on repeat all summer. Shawn and Camila’s voices go so well together and I really hope they work together in the future – I mean, they are dating atm so it is a possibility…
Although I liked ‘Do It Again’, I didn’t really make the effort to listen to any of Pia Mia’s other songs. However, when I heard ‘Bitter Love’ earlier this year, I fell in love with is, and was excited when I heard that Pia would be releasing ‘Crybaby’. This song also exceeded my expectations. With its upbeat tempo and memorable lyrics, ‘Crybaby’ is the ideal song to play when you’re going on a road trip or long car journey.
3. Get Mine
‘Get Mine’ is a catchy R&B jam from the upcoming London singer Kate Stewart. Vocally, it reminds me of JoJo and Ariana Grande, and I became obsessed with it straightaway.
This song definitely has a ‘summery’ feel to it. Like ‘Crybaby’, ‘Running’ is a good song to listen to during a road trip. It’s an empowering anthem with an equally striking video, that features Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui.
For the last two years, Ariana Grande has been a formidable force in the music industry, and her recent team-up with duo Social House is easily one of best songs of this summer. It’s about not wanting to define your relationship with someone – you don’t want to be “official” but you don’t want them to be with someone else either.
6. All For Us
I can’t get over how incredible this song is. Zendaya sounds absolutely angelic and Labrinth’s production is superb. ‘All For Us’ appears in the last episode of Euphoria and is perfect for the scene – it’s definitely my favourite song / scene combo from a TV series, and Zendaya deserves all the awards for it.
7. Rich, White, Straight Men
Kesha’s ‘Rich, White, Straight Men’ is the feminist anthem of the year, and is completely different to the other songs I’ve heard by her. It’s very cheeky, sarcastic and theatrical, imagining a world in which men aren’t in charge, and I can just imagine hearing it in a musical.
8. Only One
Kat Deluna’s most recent song ‘Only One’ gave me major summer vibes as soon as I heard it. ‘Only One’ is a great follow-up to ‘Last Night’ in Miami and its Latin rhythms make me want to hop on a plane and go to a beach in Spain.
9. Hope For the Underrated Youth / Die a Little
‘Hope For the Underrated Youth’ and ‘Die a Little’ are the best alternative songs to add to your summer playlist. ‘Hope For the Underrated Youth’ is about freedom of expression and reminds me of 2000s pop rock, especially Linkin Park and 30 Seconds To Mars. ‘Die a Little’ was released as part of the soundtrack for Season 3 of 13 Reasons Why and is less upbeat than ‘Hope For the Underrated Youth’, but still a good song.
10. Slide Away
Miley Cyrus dropped ‘Slide Away’ as a surprise release following her break-up with Liam Hemsworth a few weeks ago, and it’s a beautiful song about moving on and not being in the same place that you were years ago. ‘Slide Away’ is one of the most emotional songs on this list, but it’s also one of the most memorable songs of this summer so I had to include it.
11. Lover (album)
As I’m sure you’re already aware, Taylor Swift released her seventh album last week and it’s definitely worth the hype. ‘Lover’ is more mature than Taylor’s previous album ‘Reputation’ and includes a whole range of songs that showcase her talent as a singer-songwriter. Although I like every song on the album, my absolute favourites would have to be ‘Cruel Summer’, ‘Afterglow’, ‘Cornelia Street’, ‘You Need To Calm Down’, ‘The Archer’, ‘Daylight’ and ‘Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince’.
12. Inspired by True Events (album)
At the beginning of August, Tori Kelly released her second album ‘Inspired by True Events’. It’s an absolute masterpiece that reflects on things that happened in Tori’s life, and really highlights her angelic vocals. ‘Change Your Mind’, ‘Language’, ‘2 Places’ and ‘Sorry Would Go A Long Way’ are my top 4 songs from the album.
I’ve put all of the 50 songs in my Summer 2019 Playlist on Spotify for you to enjoy!
What do you think of these songs? Are there any new songs out that give you summer vibes?
