The New PLL

Hey guys!

How was your weekend? I’ve just come back from #ReadEatBlog, which was organised by the lovely Lauren from Blonde Vision. I joined a group of bloggers for lunch at All Bar One in Waterloo and we did a book swap. The books I picked up include Wonder by R.J. Palacio and P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern (which I’ve been meaning to read for years – maybe I’ll finally be able to watch the film after I’ve finished reading it).

So Sundays were supposed to be ‘Book Review Day’, but I decided (late yesterday afternoon) to make it ‘General Review Day’ instead. Basically, if I want to review anything (i.e. restaurants, products and films) I’ll post it on a Sunday.

Anywaaaay…I recently started watching a new show called Riverdale on Netflix, and since I’m almost halfway through, it seemed like the right time to do a review. So here it is! Enjoy!

A combination of PLL, Gossip Girl and Mean Girls. Sounds like the perfect teen show, right?

Well, let me introduce you to Riverdale, the new TV show everyone is obsessing over this year. There may have only been 4 episodes released so far, but Riverdale has already been hailed as the new Pretty Little Liars. This comes as no surprise; Riverdale is full of mystery, drama and secrets. Every character has something they want to hide.

I wasn’t aware until a couple of episodes in that Riverdale is actually based on the Archie comics, which were popular in the 1940s. The comics were adapted into a TV show by the producer of Glee, Robert Aguirre-Sacasa. I haven’t read the Archie comics myself, so I can’t really compare it to Riverdale, but I know that most of the main characters are the same – it’s mainly the plot that has been changed. The original Archie focuses on a guy called Archie and his friends.

The TV show airs on Netflix every Friday (in the UK) and follows a group of teenagers who are trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle surrounding the death of their friend Jason. There’s Jughead Jones, who does the narration and is played by Cole Sprouse (who has grown up a lot since the days of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody); Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), who struggles to please her parents and has a crush on her best friend; said best friend Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), who had an affair with his teacher; and newbie Veronica Lodge (Camilla Mendes), who used to be a typical ‘mean girl’ but wants a fresh start in Riverdale. However, Veronica has to compete with Cheryl Blossom (portrayed by Madelaine Petsch), Riverdale’s residential ‘popular girl’ and twin sister of Jason.

At the beginning of the very first episode, we are told that “Our story is about a town, a small town, and the people who live in the town.” It is then revealed that a boy called Jason had disappeared during what seemed like a normal day. It is assumed that Jason fell off a boat and drowned whilst trying to find something in the water, but no one is quite sure. The episode then changes to the present day, when Veronica moves to Riverdale with her mum. Meanwhile, Betty is getting ready to see Archie for the first time since school broke up for summer and tell him how she really feels about him. Unfortunately, Archie is infatuated with the music teacher and would rather remain just friends with Betty. While Betty and Archie are catching up, they meet Veronica, who soon becomes part of their group.

Over the course of the next few episodes, Alice Cooper tries to stop her daughter from spending time with Archie and Veronica, everyone finds out about Archie’s forbidden fling, and Veronica’s mother is caught having secret meetings with a man from the dodgy side of town. Betty and Veronica also stumble upon a book that was used by the footballers (including Jason) to rate the girls in the school. It’s similar to the ‘Burn Book’ in Mean Girls.

Although the plot does echo that of previous teen shows, Riverdale is somewhat different. Sure, it has the classic high school stereotypes (e.g. jock and popular girl), but Riverdale is diverse and tackles sexism and slut-shaming, which are both ignored in other shows of the genre. It’s worth watching Riverdale if you haven’t already. There’s enough drama and suspense to keep you guessing.

What TV shows are you watching at the moment? Do you watch Riverdale? If so, what are your thoughts?

I actually wanted to watch Riverdale even before because of Cole Sprouse! He’s one of my crushes every since Suite Life days. Riverdale is kinda dark and is quite different from the Riverdale in the comics. From the pilot, there are really creepy thoughts and scenes especially when Jason is mentioned. I think things are getting warmer about Jason’s death. Hope the reveal is soon!

  12. I’m going to admit that I just quickly skimmed through this post because I am desperate to watch this show and I didn’t want to read too much about it. Just got to finish Stranger Things first!

I’m an Archies fan all the way! When I heard about this show, Riverdale I was excited to check it out. The thing is like you said it differs from what I’ve grown to love and I’m not sure I want to take my beloved characters and see another realization. I think I’ll let a season pass and then see if I’ll give it a watch.

Aahhhh! I started watching the first day it was available on Netflix, and as an Archie Comics fan, I was expecting a lot from the show. There’s been hype about that since last year, and Riverdale is THE place where everything happened, haha. I must say they don’t look like high school students here, which brings an edgier side to the characters. Archie doesn’t even look like himself! Well. Hahah.
