Tune Tuesday: Top Underrated Singers

top-underrated-singers

Hey guys!

I’m guessing a lot of you are fed up of listening to the same few singers and bands all the time, so I thought I’d round up 8 of my favourite underrated artists for you. I always love discovering new singers – hopefully this post will enable you to do the same!

1. Demi Lovato

Considering Demi Lovato has been performing for years, it’s crazy how few people have actually heard of her. Demi is one of the most talented singers around, and she deserves so much more recognition. Unlike most other current artists, Demi has stayed true to herself throughout the years, and she hasn’t let the fact that she was bullied as a teenager and suffered from self-harm get in the way of her career. Her music is a mixture of pop, pop rock and R&B, and she has an impressive vocal range, just like her influences Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson. I pretty much love all of Demi’s songs, but my favourites are ‘Lightweight’, ‘Skyscraper‘, ‘Heart Attack‘ and ‘Warrior‘.

2. Liv Dawson

Liv Dawson is a singer-songwriter from London. She falls into the pop, R&B and soul genres, and lists Beyonce and Amy Winehouse as her inspirations. If you haven’t heard of Liv Dawson yet, I’m sure you will soon, as the singer is signed with Method Records, which is owned by Disclosure. Check out Tapestry to get a feel of Liv Dawson’s voice.

3. Emma Blackery

Emma Blackery is another artist best known for her YouTube channel, which has over 1.4 million subscribers. I first discovered Emma Blackery back in 2014, when she performed live at Summer in the City, and I haven’t been able to get her songs out of my head since. I particularly love ‘The Promise‘, which was actually the first song I heard by Emma. It’s worth listening to it if you’re ever feeling down and need reminding that there are people in your life who really do care about you. Her other songs, like ‘Sucks To Be You‘ and ‘Go The Distance‘, are reminiscent of Avril Lavigne and early Paramore.

4. Tori Kelly

Tori Kelly appeared on American Idol when she was a teenager, but unfortunately didn’t make it that far in the competition. However, Tori thankfully decided to continue singing and started posting videos on YouTube, mostly covers of other songs. She released her first EP ‘Handmade Songs by Tori Kelly’ in 2012, under her own label, Toraay Records. She has since performed alongside Ed Sheeran and featured on Professor Green’s ‘Lullaby‘.  I’d say Tori’s best songs are ‘Should’ve Been Us‘ and ‘Dear No One‘.

5. Against the Current

Against the Current is a pop rock band from New York that consists of lead singer Chrissy Constanza, guitarist Dan Gow, and drummer Will Ferri. They rose to YouTube fame after posting numerous covers of famous songs, including ‘Uptown Funk‘ and ‘Let Me Love You‘. Against the Current have also released several original songs which feature on their albums ‘In Our Bones’ and ‘Infinity’. Their sound is quite similar to Paramore. I’d recommend checking out ‘Running With The Wild Things‘, ‘Wasteland‘ and ‘Young & Relentless‘.

6. Sarah Close

Like Against the Current and Tori Kelly, Sarah Close is best known for uploading covers onto YouTube. She has come a long way since 2009 and is now signed with Parlophone Records, who also managed All Saints, The Chemical Brothers and Stereophonics. Sarah released her debut single ‘Call Me Out‘ in March, and it was shortly followed by ‘Caught Up‘.

7. JoJo

JoJo’s debut singles ‘Leave (Get Out)‘ and ‘Baby It’s You‘ were hugely popular amongst teens in 2004/5, but her later albums have sadly fallen under the radar. Only true fans will be familiar with JoJo’s latest album ‘Mad Love’, which was released last year. My favourite song from ‘Mad Love’ would have to be ‘I Can Only‘ (which features Alessia Cara).

8. Hayley Kiyoko

Hayley Kiyoko is a synth-pop singer from California who has performed in a handful of films, including Lemonade Mouth and Jem and the Holograms. She has a dreamy voice and her songs contain LGBT- friendly lyrics. Although she’s not well-known, Hayley Kiyoko has had a lot of impact on LGBT youths and she has encouraged them to come out.

Other singers / bands that deserve a mention are Skylar Grey, Tessa Violet, Fickle Friends and Rachel Platten (she’s been so quiet since ‘Fight Song‘).
